Your Story: Meet RJ Jaya P

In Your Story -- An exclusive interview with newsmakers by Hong Kong Desi -- today, we are introducing Radio Jockey Jaya Peesapaty (RJ Jaya) and her work.

HKD: Please tell us about yourself, RJ Jaya.

Jaya: I am Jaya Peesapaty, wife of a Marine Engineer, living in Hong Kong since 2002. It has been unfortunately a rough start for me in Hong Kong. That made me put myself to be as a helpline to those who move to Hong Kong. I started helping them through a platform now known as The Hong Kong Telugu Samakhya. Once I am approached, I basically guide them into settling here and beyond. With my two children and a constantly travelling husband, I wanted to keep myself busy. Engaging myself as a helpline, voluntarily teaching Telugu language and organizing events for this small community from then Andhra Pradesh was very satisfying. I am also associated with other Indian non-profit organizations in Hong Kong and serve them from time to time. Still, there was something that I wanted to do and to have a career. I took up teaching toddlers, which would rejuvenate my energy and spirit. Thus, life seems to be pretty much actively engaging me in what I wanted to do.
HKD: How did you start your career as a Radio Jockey?
Jaya: With the community The Hong Kong Telugu Samakhya growing bigger and its increasing activities, I started sending news write-ups on these to various NRI news portals. Fortunately, one of the news portals started an Online Live Web Radio and asked me to volunteer as a Radio Jockey. My journey began as a Radio Presenter with a freehand to conceptualize and design the format of the Live Talk show. Probably it was a call for my submerged aspiration of serving our nation through Armed Forces Medical Corps once and so I chose to dedicate one of the given slots to Jai Hind, dedicated to our country’s Armed Forces. It’s been six years and counting. I am very pleased to say that am honoured to have had Param Vir Chakra, Sena Medal, Ashok Chakra and Shaurya Chakra recipients on Jai Hind.
Through Jai Hind, I wanted to convey to my fellow citizens that a soldier leaves behind his family, friends, festivals and fun times to keep us safe and secure. He, if needed, readily sacrifices his life protecting his country and countrymen. Jai Hind also introduces martyr’s families to convey that it's not only the soldier who does the sacrifices, it's also his family that goes through the rough rides of sacrifice too.
HKD: What are your plans for the future?
Jaya: It’s been 3 years since I have been organizing Kargil Vijay Diwas (KVD) in Hong Kong to pay tributes to our martyrs and celebrate the victorious return of other soldiers. Owing to great demand, we organized at a bigger venue and the event had messages from Kargil veterans and friends. We also had an opportunity of knowing how was the life in an army man's family through 'Growing up as an Army Kid' where people shared their experiences. There were cultural programs on patriotic themes that left the gathering spellbound. Truly, there was a tremendous response and attendance with many prominent personalities of Hong Kong attended enthusiastically.
About KVD 2018: This year the event was blessed by the presence of Honorary Guest, Mrs Purviz Rusy Shroff, MH. Mrs Shroff is popularly known and regarded for her outstanding and dedicated community and charitable service, particularly her contributions to Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association and Mother's Choice. Mrs Shroff is awarded Medal of Honour by the Hong Kong SAR Government in its 2018 Honours List.

HKD: What is your message to Indians in Hong Kong?
Jaya: My message or request to my fellow countrymen is to please take the opportunity of paying respect to our soldiers on 26^th July every year on Kargil Vijay Diwas Day. We got our freedom 72 years back, but it is being kept safe and secure because our men in uniform are sacrificing their lives for us. Let’s respect and regard their sacrifices and of their families' too. Jai Hind.

Dedicated to brave hearts from Armed Forces and pay a tribute to our saviours. Also, spreading love for our country and soldiers.
