India Club in Hong Kong: Fulfilling the Social Needs of Indian Community
The building, constructed in 1949, was originally known as “The Kowloon Indian Tennis Club” and is believed to have been operational before the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong in 1941. The inaugural committee meeting took place in 1949, chaired by Dr. Mahan Singh.
The name "India Club" was officially registered in 1967, making it the oldest recreational club located in the heart of Kowloon.
Currently, Mr. Nanu Lachman serves as President, having held the position on two previous occasions. He is committed to the advancement and growth of the India Club, working to unite the Indian community through increased sports and cultural programs.
On a social level, the India Club actively promotes Indian art and cultural initiatives.
In the past, the club has hosted numerous events, including annual functions like the Diwali Ball, Dussehra celebrations, and the Miss India Hong Kong pageant.
The club proudly maintains a rich tradition of organizing various cultural and musical performances to enrich the artistic experiences of the Indian community.
The facilities feature tennis and badminton courts, a gymnasium, and a recently renovated restaurant that offers a delightful array of Indian cuisine and snacks. Their private rooms and lawns are frequently used for social gatherings.
India Club provides a wide range of sports and recreational activities, including badminton, tennis, and cricket.
Cricket has found its new home at India Club:We boast six (6) cricket net lanes and are the only club with a Virtual Bowling Machine. Recently, we converted two nets into actual turf wickets, allowing both members and non-members to refine their cricketing skills. One turf wicket is designed for fast-paced play, while the other offers a slow-paced experience.
India Club is proud to have a total of nine junior cricket teams, four senior teams, and two women's cricket teams competing in league matches across Hong Kong.
Our Sports Director, Mr. Ankur Vasishta, a former player for the Hong Kong National Team, is dedicated to developing cricket by sharing his expertise and knowledge within the Indian community.
Additionally, India Club employs four cricket coaches to teach the sport and promote cricket as a popular recreational activity.
